Become a volunteer tutor
At Fox Valley Literacy, we believe everyone deserves the chance to succeed. With 1 in 7 adults in Wisconsin struggling with basic literacy, your support is crucial. We’re seeking passionate volunteer tutors to help empower adults in our community through free classes in English, General Education, Civics & Citizenship, and more.
By becoming a tutor, you can play a vital role in breaking the cycle of low literacy, helping individuals gain the skills they need to secure better employment, support their families, and engage fully in civic life. Working alongside adult learners fosters a unique perspective on the challenges faced by individuals, which can lead to greater empathy and cultural growth. Tutors also benefit from the rewarding relationships they build with their students and their families, often finding friendship and inspiration in their resilience and determination.

A: We offer various tutoring opportunities, including tutoring individual learners, teaching group classes, computer classes, preparing students for the citizenship test, plus other individual projects.
If you don’t see yourself as a teacher, but still want to help, we always need assistance with things like child supervision and transportation for our students, plus administrative tasks and helping with events. See options here.
A: Do I need to have teaching experience to volunteer tutor?
Q: No prior teaching or tutoring experience is required! We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. We provide training and support to help you succeed in your role.
A: Do I need to speak another language to volunteer tutor?
Q: Some of our tutors speak languages beyond English, but no foreign language skills are required!
Q: How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer tutor?
A: We ask for 50 hours per year, or roughly one hour per week. Whether you can commit a few hours a week or just one, your support makes a difference. We can discuss a schedule that works for you.
Q: What qualifications do I need to be a tutor?
A: While specific qualifications are not required, a passion for education and helping others is essential. We provide training to ensure you feel confident in your tutoring role.
Q: Is all tutoring activity done at your offices in Appleton?
A: Our facility in downtown Appleton is a great location to meet students because of its central location and adjacency to the Valley Transit hub. However, many of our students and tutors elect to meet at locations around our four-county service area that are more convenient for them. Ultimately, lesson location is determined between you and your student.
